Merton, binanggit niya na hindi dapat ibaling ang epekto sa lipunan ng layunin ng mass communication. Nagkakaroon ang pagpapahayag ng side effects; ito ay ang mga resulta o epekto na hindi kasali sa intensyon ng media. Maaaring ang epekto sa lipunan ay positibo o negatibo. Isang halimbawa ng side effects ay ang kampanya laban sa paninigarilyo na ang layon ay hikayatin itigil ito ng mga tao, ngunit sa karagdagan, maaari rin nitong palakasin ang reputasyon at moral ng public health workers na noon ay hindi nabibigyang pansin ng mamamayan. Maari itong magresulta sa isang kooperatibang komunidad na ang layunin ay kalusugan para sa buong bayan.
